Vinci 2.0 = Small World

Days of Wonder is coming out with this new version of Vinci called Small World. Vinci with a fantasy theme? Count me in. Go and vote on BGG for the top 3 most popular races.... which obviously are Amazons, Dwarves, and Ghouls.

Wow, someone is taking a good game and doing a fresh remodel; what a great idea!
I voted... and posted a little blog post.

I voted, too. I was *this* close (hold thumb and forefinger about 2mm apart), but didn't buy Vinci after we played it the one time. This new version might sway me.

Small world is now a preorder at Thought Hammer for a May release.

Vinci is a cool game. I have played a lot of it. Some friends of mine even created an email version of it using Exel that you send around. It works pretty well although you need a neutral non-playing moderator.

I am eager to actually pick up this game, I never picked up Vinci because my game group had 4 or 5 copies of it so it never seemed urgent to pick it up personally.

The most interesting aspect of it is you take control of a civilization for only a short period, eventually you are compelled to ditch it and start a new one. The weakness of the game is the end game, folks usually went on an all out rampage on their last turn in a frantic bid to gain some points, because their civilzation did'nt have to survive another turn.

There is a variant which allows for a variable ending where nobody knows exactly when the game will end which curbs the "Last Turn Rampage" because they might have to play another turn with the remnants of their civilization.

Peace

What I don't like about the unmodified game is that the last turn or two can go much more slowly due to analysis paralysis, since you have perfect information. I use a very simple fix.

I give people chips for victory points and a bag to hide them in. At the end of each turn people announce the point range they are in. For example, if 100 points is the win, then the possible point ranges are 1-79, 80-89, 90-99, 100+.

This has worked every time.

Vinci is available as a turn-based game at two places that I know of. I'd be happy to get in a game or two that way:

It looks like Ludagora now has a version that will do English as well. The first one, the signup and what-not is in German.

Anybody wants to play a game, let me know and I'll set one up at one of the sites (you can password protect the signup).

I like Vinci a lot, but I'd like to get the new one for a few reasons:

1. cool art and theme (it's got that cool Days of Wonder touch)
2. Map now adjusts to the number of players
3. now not all pairings of powers are possible because of how the two tiles for each Civ 'connect' ... suggesting that you won't get omnipotent combos.

Trying to sell my old vinci now on BGG....
